The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has launched a proposal to restrict the use of certain hexavalent chromium substances (Cr(VI)). These compounds are among the most potent occupational carcinogens, posing a major threat to workers’ health.

Why is this happening?
Following a risk assessment and socio-economic analysis, ECHA concluded that current authorisation under REACH does not provide sufficient protection. The proposed restriction would replace existing rules and ensure stronger, EU-wide control of these hazardous substances.

What is included?
The proposal foresees exemptions if strict exposure and emission limits are met. These cover:

  • formulation of mixtures,
  • electroplating on plastic and metallic substrates,
  • use of primers and slurries,
  • other surface treatments,
  • functional additives and process aids.

Next steps
The draft restriction is subject to public consultation. After this process, the European Commission together with EU Member States will decide on the final measures.
